GAGE COUNTY COURTHOUSE
Beatrice, Nebraska

The supervisors of Gage County, as stewards of their historic courthouse, selected Berggren Architects to create a Space Needs and Master Plan that will help them utilize the courthouse well into the 21st century. We have interviewed the occupants of the building, measured workspaces, and identified the best use for every square inch of space. After completing the Master Plan, it was put into effect with renovations while keeping the historic character of the building. The first series of projects began by replacing the deteriorated roof with historically accurate green slate shingles. Soon to follow will be the installation of an energy-efficient ground source heat pump system, new electrical, fire sprinklers and alarms, as well as new and more energy efficient, historically sensitive thermal glazed windows.

JEFFERSON COUNTY COURTHOUSE
Fairbury, Nebraska

Our firm has had a long-standing relationship with the people of the county of Jefferson. We have completed a variety of projects to improve this building including an elevator installation, new roof, stone stair replacements, and renovation of the interior to accommodate the Health and Human Services of Nebraska offices. After documenting the stones and mortar joints of the entire building, we prepared construction documents to restore the exterior. Much of the sandstone and limestone of the building is deteriorating and crumbling so our repairs include patching or replacement of the stones.

WICK CUTTER HOUSE
Red Cloud, NE

Originally owned by Matthew R. Bentley, this historic house in Red Cloud was built in 1883 by J. Brubaker. The house is a one and one-half story frame building in the Gothic Revival style. Because this house is the prototype for Wick Cutter and his residence in Willa Cather’s novel My Antonia, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Berggren Architects has been retained to restore and renovate the house for a private owner, who will then use it as a summer home.

CASS COUNTY COURTHOUSE
Plattsmouth, NE

Cass County Courthouse in Plattsmouth Nebraska retained Berggren Architects to complete a space needs study, as well as a study of the building envelope, with the intention of renovating the interior to accommodate the changing needs and storage of the occupants, as well as re-roofing and restoring the exterior of the building. Currently we are re-roofing the courthouse with slate shingles, similar to the original shingles, and adding fire sprinklers to the interior as well as fire separation between floors. After these projects are completed we will work with the courthouse occupants to address their space and storage needs.

See how a comprehensive restoration plan is bringing new life to this 1892 courthouse, while respecting the constraints of a modest annual budget.
