THAYER COUNTY COURTHOUSE, circa 1902
Hebron, NE

Thayer County has recently retained Berggren Architects to renovate the interior of its courthouse with a special focus on security and energy efficiency for the Courts. This project will include replacing the Courtroom glass block windows with energy efficient, insulated windows emulating the character of the original windows; rearranging the Courthouse occupants to dedicate second floor for use by the Courts and supporting offices; creating a more appropriate-sized Jury Deliberation Room; and provide for computer networking for the Court Offices and Courtroom.

WILDWOOD PERIOD HOUSE
Nebraska City, NE

Berggren Architects has worked with the Board of Directors for the Wildwood Period House in Nebraska City for a number of years to guide on-going maintenance. Some of our past projects have included re-roofing, re-painting, and designing a drainage plan that has been incorporated in phases. Currently we are preparing a maintenance manual and continuing the implementation of the drainage plan designed a few years ago.

VALLEY COUNTY COURTHOUSE (CIRCA 1919)
Ord, Nebraska

Berggren Architects has worked with Valley County for a number of years to solve its need for accessibility and safety. The beautiful Beaux-Arts style courthouse in Ord, Nebraska was built in 1919. Our firm has been retained to incorporate an elevator into this building, being sympathetic to the original design and the historic finishes. We also will be designing and implementing a series of fire safety improvements that include a exterior exit and sprinklers. Exterior maintenance is also an issue with this masonry and terra cotta building, and as the other projects get underway we will be taking measures to tuck point and moisture proof.

WARNER’S FILLING STATION/TOURISM CENTER
Red Cloud, NE

Built in 1922, the structure served as a service station for the community until 1994. The owner donated the property to the city to be renovated as a tourism center for the area. Currently the property is in the midst of a ground fuel reclamation process, required by the Environmental Protection Agency. Berggren has been hired to restore the unique character of the building to resemble the old gas station in its original glory, with a modern function. The project includes the replacement of the old gas pumps and air service station, period lighting, a new roof, new stucco, new doors, windows and new paving. The interior’s original finishes will be repaired or replaced and much of the original equipment that has been salvaged from the old structure will be reinstalled.

WARREN OPERA HOUSE
Friend, Nebraska

Berggren Architects was retained to create an assessment of the Warren Opera House in Friend, Nebraska. This assessment is part of a process that will transform the opera house into a centerpiece for the community of Friend. The assessment is geared toward stabilizing the structure to prevent further deterioration, and secondarily toward the restoration of the building. The stabilization work is imperative and creating a Master Plan to guide the development of the building is equally important. The restoration of the Opera House, incorporating modern uses and amenities while maintaining its historic character, is an exciting possibility.

The Master Plan will establish in writing the community’s goals for the building and the requirements that we will follow as new life is designed for this community landmark.

See how a comprehensive restoration plan is bringing new life to this 1892 courthouse, while respecting the constraints of a modest annual budget.
