Jerry L. Berggren, AIA, Principal

Jerry Berggren is the founder and Principal-in-Charge of Berggren Architects. He has been in the architectural profession for more than 30 years. He graduated in 1971 from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree and spent a year and half working in Kansas City improving neighborhoods and business districts for the Urban Renewal Agency. In 1973, he returned to his native Nebraska and joined a Lincoln based architectural firm. In 1977 he began private practice under his own name.

His love of history and historic architect has focused the firm in historic preservation. Jerry has personally participated in over 90 restoration projects for more than 60 structures, 55 of these structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He has successfully completed projects in historic restoration, adaptive reuse, retro-fit, and new construction. His most recently completed project, the restoration of the Fillmore County Courthouse was recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation with its 2002 Preservation Honors Award. Jerry is active in a number of preservation organizations including the Friends of Whitehall Mansion and the American Institute of Architects Historic Resources Committee (Chair 1996).

Jerry is personally involved in all projects as Principal-in-Charge and is the Project Architect for our historic projects.

Laurel Shoemaker, Lighting and design consultant
Berggren Architects

Laurel, an integral member of the firm for more than two decades, now serves as a part-time consultant on select projects.

An Assistant Professor of Lighting at UNL's Johnny Carson School of Theatre & Film, her visual design training via the theatre profession adds a unique clarity and coordination for selection of finish, colors and texture while providing valuable input for interior design and lighting.

Laurel holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in theatre lighting and design as well as an associate's degree in architectural technology.

Wim Kersten, AIA Associate, Job Captain
Berggren Architects



Wim brings experience to the team. Experience in terms of years in the field of architecture, and in diversity of project involvement. Wim has an Associate of Architectural Technology degree from Southeast Community College, Milford Campus.

He graduated in 1983 and spent the next two years working for contractors in Lincoln as a framer and general laborer. After gaining valuable first-hand knowledge of the field workings of a construction site, Wim started a career in architecture. In the 19 years that followed, Wim has been involved in projects ranging from residential additions to retirement communities, health care facilities, and all forms of justice facilities.

Wim's interest in history is a perfect fit into the Berggren team of historical preservation and restoration. His exposure via extensive world travel has gained him an appreciation for historic as well as ultra modern architecture.

Kristin Miles, Associate AIA, LEED AP, Intern Architect
Berggren Architects



Kristin Miles joined the firm in April 2009. An alumnus of the University of Nebraska, she earned her Bachelor of Science in 2006 and Master of Architecture degree in 2008. She also spent a summer studying architecture in Hannover, Germany. She is now studying for the LEED AP exam. As other interns in the field, she must complete the Intern Development Program before she is eligible to take the professional exam. A native to Lincoln, Kristin is very familiar with Nebraska's architecture and history. As a graduate student she created a project to offer adaptive re-use options for Lincoln's iconic Pershing Auditorium.

Kristin is an Associate Member of the American Institute of Architects and belongs to the Lincoln Young Professionals Group. She is also a member of the Nebraska State Historical Society and Preservation Association of Lincoln.

Shannon K. Jones, Project Manager, Associate IIDA, LEED AP
Berggren Architects



Shannon Jones first came to Berggren Architects in the year 2000 as an intern. She now holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Interior Architecture from Kansas State University and received teaching certification from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She taught drafting and design at the high school level and worked as an intern architect at another firm before joining our staff as Project Manager. In addition to managing construction projects for our senior architects, she provides valuable expertise in the latest “green building” standards.

Marcus Zettler, Associate AIA
Berggren Architects



Zettler began at the firm in January, 2010. A Wisconsin native, he attended the University of Wisconsin for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He received his Master of Architecture in 2006 with a certificate in Historic Preservation. He will start the examination process this spring to become a licensed architect in Nebraska.

While still a student, Zettler worked on a number of important historic preservation projects including a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He also participated in the survey and restoration of an ancient cathedral in San Gemini, Italy.

He is currently assisting with a renovation project for the Valley County Courthouse in Ord, Nebraska and will also work on the upcoming renovation and restoration of the Thayer County Courthouse in Hebron.

Janet L. Jeffries, Architectural Historian/Preservation Historian
Berggren Architects



Janet Jeffries holds an impressive professional and academic resume as an educator, writer, and researcher in the field of historical and architectural preservation. Her professional experience represents a life-long passion for architectural history. Currently, she is the College Historian for Doane College in Crete and is the Curator and Educational Director for the Crete Heritage Society. She served as the Historian/Architectural Historian in the State Historic Preservation Office at the Nebraska State Historical Society from 1974 to 1987 where she worked in all aspects of the State's preservation program.

Janet received her Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1974 and a Masters of Arts Degree in history and architecture from UNL in 1996. She has been a consultant for Berggren Architects since 1994 and is now employed as its Architectural Historian/Preservation Historian.

Janet currently serves on the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Board, is a member of the American Association for State and Local History, and other historical organizations. She has authored more than 60 National Register of Historic Places nominations representing virtually all styles of architecture found in Nebraska.

Mitzi (Mary G.) Willis, ASID, Interior Designer
Berggren Architects



Mitzi's experience in interior design (with an emphasis on historic homes) is a perfect complement to the firm's renovation and restoration focus. Mitzi has degrees from both the College of Saint Mary (BA in Computer Graphics, 1996) in Omaha and the University of Missouri in Columbia (BS in Housing and Interior Design, 1970).

Her employment experience includes seven years in residential design, three years in the antique furniture and accessory business, four year stint as vice president of her design and construction firm in Omaha, and she also held a position at the Nebraska State Historical Society Ford Consevation Labrotory,Omaha, NE, from 1998 until 2001as a labrotory tech for the object’s conservator, Deborah Long. Mitzi's initial project upon joining Berggren Architects was the historic Harry T. Jones House. A structure which has been in the same family for five generations. Mitzi has led the owners through the myriad of family antiques to arrive at the perfect solution for the new generation assuming the responsibility for this wonderful home.

Mary Alice Johnson, Administrative Assistant
Berggren Architects



M. A.’s contribution to the Team of Berggren Architects is to organize all of our communication with the clients, contractors, and subcontractors. She handles all bidding and post bidding documents (i.e. shop drawings) as well as producing and organizing our contracts, and other documents. She is our photo archivist as well as our Librarian.

M.A. graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor in Fine Art. That background plus her interest in history, and architectural preservation makes her a valuable member of our team.
