Berggren Architects were retained by the Holt County Board of Supervisors to review their courthouse for compliance with the accessibility standards (ADA Audit). As the ADA requirements were being addressed it became apparent that spending the County’s revenue on a 70 year old “make-do” annex was not appropriate. We were retained to develop a space study of all County Offices and begin the Master Planning Process. The Master Plan prioritized the total needs of the County and their estimated costs. These needs included a new mechanical system, new electrical service and code improvements for the Jail and Communications Center. It also indicated the need for improved security and increased space for all of the offices of the courthouse. The most economical and efficient way to improve the courthouse and satisfy all of the needs of the space was an addition. Our addition for the courthouse was complete in the summer of 2005 and includes an elevator and restroom facilities to achieve accessibility to all floors, a new County Courtroom, and storage for the Clerk of the County Court; a new Supervisors hearing room, more storage for the County Assessor, a completely renovated Jail and new Sheriff’s office and Dispatch Center.
